18th Annual Washington State Christian Talent Contest

Worthy Music Ministries
presents the
18th Annual Washington State Christian Talent Contest returns on April 9, 2011!!

We've taken a break since 2007 to commit ourselves to other ministry events, and now we are ready to bring back the Talent Contest - by popular demand! Come be a part of the largest and oldest Christian talent contest on the West Coast!

Open to all ages and performance styles and disciplines.

Original music is required only if you are entering the songwriting category.

The Talent Contest is graciously hosted by Comedienne Tracie Davis and her church, Bethlehem Baptist Church at 4818 Portland Avenue in Tacoma.

This is a wonderful opportunity for you to share your God-given talents and network with other artists in a warm, supportive, and encouraging atmosphere.

This exciting event will take place on Saturday, April 9, 2011.

Overview of the Contest

The first 20 contestants to enter in each of the following categories will compete in the Semi Finals (with the exception of songwriting, which has no limit to number of contestants).

The top 3 from each performing category will compete in the Finals for cash prizes, merchandise, and media interviews, plus high profile venue performances!

Categories and Entry Fees are as follows (note: entry fees are based on the entry, not on a per-person basis):
Youth (age 6-13) $20 per entry
Youth (age 14-20) $20 per entry
Female or Male Vocalists $30 per entry
Miscellaneous (Drama, Dance, Comedy, Instrumentals, Mime, Poetry, etc.) $30 per entry
Groups (Choirs, Ensembles, Duets, Bands performing praise and worship, contemporary, classical, jazz, gospel, etc.) $40 per entry

The Youth category is an open category - youths can perform as soloists, instrumentalists, choirs, duets, dance, etc. in either their Youth category and/or in the applicable Adult category (at the appropriate entry fee). Due to the Sanctuary being the only location able to accommodate bands, Youth-aged bands must perform in the Group category, but they may pay the Youth entry fee.

SONGWRITING: Songwriting (any genre) $15 per song (5 songs entitles songwriter to enter in one performing category for free, as long as an opening exists). Only the Songwriting category is pre-screened and their songs must be received not later than March 10, 2011. Songwriting materials will not be returned. The top rated 3 songs will be judged in late March and the songwriter will be notified by April 2 if they were selected as a Finalist. The top 3 songwriters will compete "live" in the Finals on April 9.

How to Enter

Read the information and rules. Remember, any entries postmarked or emailed BEFORE January 15, 2011 will be returned.

You can also email your entry form to LindaWorthy@earthlink.net. This will hold your place for approximately 72 hours, but until you send the entry fee in the mail, you will not receive a contestant confirmation letter.
Don't forget to include your entry fee - check or money order made payable to Dightman's Bible Book Centers.

If you are not one of the first 20 to enter in your category (with the exception of songwriting which has no limit), your entry fee will be returned to you.

Contest Rules

The Washington State Christian Talent Contest was conceived and organized by Chuck and Linda Worthy of Worthy Music Ministries.

The Talent Contest is the largest gathering of local Christian performers in Washington, and provides the opportunity for musicians and non-traditional talent (such as drama, dance, comedy, gymnastics, rap, mime, etc.) to perform and network with their peers.

Contestants are judged on how well they do what they do as opposed to age, marketability, looks, or style of music.

There are no age or state residency requirements.

Anyone may enter the Contest.

All performance disciplines and styles are welcome, but your performance selection must be one of the following: Christian or Sacred or Classical or Patriotic or Positive Message. No show tunes, political messages, or “adult content” lyrics.

Worthy Music Ministries reserves the right to disqualify any contestant not following written requirements. If you are not sure that your selection meets the requirements, check with us BEFORE entering the contest.

Contestants may enter in more than one category (one performance per entry fee), but each selection may not exceed approximately 3-4 minutes in length. Comedy and Drama selections may be slightly longer, but entries exceeding 5 minutes MUST be approved prior to the Talent Contest.

Because there is a songwriting category, no extra credit will be given for original music.

Accompaniment may be either background tracks (CD) or live instrumentation; however, male vocalists and female vocalists (individual artists) may not use more than one type of accompaniment: either cd, OR one of the following: guitar, piano, keyboard, a cappella, etc.

If selected for the Finals, contestants must perform their Semi Finals' selection - no exceptions.

The "Annual Washington State Christian Talent Contest" is a registered trademark of Worthy Music Ministries.

Deadlines to Enter

Songwriters: your complete songwriting entry (see details on the entry form) must be postmarked NOT LATER THAN MARCH 10, 2011 and mailed to PO Box 933, Gig Harbor, WA 98335.

All other contestants: the Talent Contest opens January 15, 2011.

All Entry Forms postmarked or emailed BEFORE January 15, 2011 will be returned.

Categories will remain open until full.

Judging Criteria for Performance

Performance categories are judged on:

Overall performance and delivery

Professional and confident actions

Audience/director eye contact

Appropriate emotions and facial expressions

Appropriate dynamics (words/notes/movements)

Enunciation/precision (words/notes/movements)

Words/notes/movements memorized

Selection appropriate for range and abilities

Selection technically challenging

Judging Criteria for Songwriting

Songwriting is judged on:

Hook: the music and lyrics must have a hook - something that "grabs" the listener's attention and helps him to remember the song and sing along with it.

Blend: the song must be able to blend both the music and lyrics together so that the listener's reaction is "the music was made for the words" or vice versa. The lyrics should reflect the mood of the melody line. The songwriter should not try to fit in too many lyrics so that timing and phrasing are sacrificed. If the lyrics rhyme, they should make sense and not be forced or trite.

Originality: Are the lyrics original or overused in other songs (it is okay to use scripture passages without losing points for originality). Do the lyrics convey a new, unusual or different perspective to a familiar topic? Are the lyrics used creatively and in a fresh manner? Is the music original or are overused note intervals used?

Marketability: Regardless of the style (rap, rock, country, classical, etc.), the song should be marketable in its "market." Does the song appeal to the masses (of its particular market)?

Overall: Is there "just something" about the song? Does the song have "hit potential" for radio air play? Would a person buy an album just because this particular song is on it? Would an established performer or group want to sing this song (country performer if it's a country song, rock if it's a rock song, classical if it's a classical song, etc.)?

NOTE: Instrumentation, special effects, vocal ability and overall production worthiness are irrelevant to this critique. Each song is judged on the above criteria (the song itself) and not the actual presentation of it.
